I finally got the chance to run for the first time in over two months.
And it was AWESOME!
I got the "all clear" on Friday but somehow waited until Monday to get out and run.
Going in, I had a little bit of fear. Really just little silly worries: will the knee be ok, will I get shin splints, will I remember how to run, will I be terribly slow, will I have to - gulp - walk.
Monday afternoon was the perfect time to get that first run. I couldn't think of any better way to get going than my favorite running weather: hot-as-balls! The temperature had to have been over 90. I know a lot of people don't like running when it's that hot but I love it. It really make me pay more attention to my body and how efficient I am.
As I was getting ready to go outside my kids asked where I was going. Of course they all wanted to go but the girls just can't make it but my son can ride his bike right along with me. Those are some of my favorite runs when I run and Nate rides his bike beside me around the neighborhood.
I put my music on so I would have some motivation but kept it playing low so I could listen for Nate and for traffic.
The first mile went really well. I felt like I hadn't missed any time at all. My time was just a little over a 9 minute mile. The second mile was right at a 9 minute mile.
Something really awesome happened at the end of mile 2. As we were coming to the end of the mile one of Nate's friends in the neighborhood was riding his bike on our street. When we passed him Nate stopped and looked back at his friend and then looked at me. I had already told him he could stop whenever he wanted. I just kept going. I went a little less than a tenth of a mile from there and this song started. The song starts with a phone being dialed and Josey Scott's young son tell his dad "I wanna be a rockstar when I grow up........Just like you!" The awesome part was that as I heard the phone being dialed Nate pulled up beside me! So during the interaction between father and son on the song, Nate was smiling the biggest smile and it felt like we were having that conversation without even saying a word. It was truly a memory I will never forget. He chose riding beside me over playing with a kid that every time he goes outside he looks to see if he is home. I don't think my feet touched the ground that last mile.
The third and final mile was just about as wonderful as I could ever dream. If I had any fear or doubt about how I would finish it went away easily. I have been teaching him that at the end of a run or race to finish strong. When we get to that last stretch on our way to the end of our street we go as hard as we can.
My final time was 26:41. Not bad for having not run for over two months, putting on 15+ (I stopped checking) pounds and being worried that my body would fall apart right there on the street.
Here is a picture of me and Nate after our run.
